  • 2020 NFL P.O.W. Week #1 (September 10-14 ) Post Plays Here

Welcome back to year ????? of this annual contest. Since I never heard of any complaints/comments/concerns from last season, we will just roll with the same rules from last year. Fingers crossed we get a full 17 weeks in!

This is the thread for the 2020 VFV NFL P.O.W. contest. The following are the rules for this year (the same as in the past):

    1. All contestants must be a member in good standing with VFV Forums
    2. Players make one (1) single play ATS each week during the NFL regular season
    3. A correct play results in one (1) point being awarded. A "push" or tie, results in a half point (1/2) being awarded
    4. An Incorrect play results in zero (0) points being awarded
    5. All lines MUST be taken from the following website each week: http://www.vegasinsider.com/nfl/odds/las-vegas/
    6. All lines must be -110 or less (must be posted on above site...no buying 1/2 point)
    7. Only Vegas Sports Books listed on the VI website will be allowed
    8. The following Books will NOT be allowed: VI Consensus, BetOnline, PepperMill, Atlantis Reno
    9. The following selections are allowed: Full Game Side, Full Game Total, First Half Side, First Half Total (NO MONEYLINES ALLOWED)
    10. Plays MUST be submitted each week by kickoff of last scheduled game.
    11. Plays must be in the following format (or close to it):

2019 NFL P.O.W. (0-0-0 (post your current record here))

    Atlanta Falcons +3 (Golden Nugget)
(This is where you will post your reasoning for this selection. It doesn't have to be a book or even a full paragraph, but more than just "I think the Falcons are better.")

    12. Myself, Seahawk Rick (the artist formerly known as Cybergolf) or any other I deem so, will have final ruling on if a play is valid (ie: Wrong line, Wrong Book, Not enough reasoning given, etc)
    13. The first couple of weeks I will give the benefit of the doubt to any newcomers on here...veterans, you know the rules, LMEAO
    14. NO EDITING!!! (ironic, as this was edited by DaveTuley LMEAO)...you can't change your pick after you post it as this supposed to mirror the real world where you lock in your bet at the current number...if you need to clarify something in original post (typed in wrong team or line, or forget to cite sportsbooks, etc.), please quote in new post to bring it to the moderators attention
    15. For the first time, this year, Week 17 will be worth 2 points for a correct selection and 1 point for a push.
    16. To qualify for the playoff round of this competition, players must have a total of 10 points by the end of the regular season (week 17)...important note: your points will be the number of Units you start with in the playoff portion of the contest that runs through the Super Bowl and will be run by DaveTuley with locked-in spreads and totals, though Tuley often will give extra options if the market has variances such as Patriots -6.5 but also Steelers +7 being available); still debating maximum units allowed for playoff round (currently 5-unit max bet each playoff weekend).
    17. Since we are not doing the SuperContest Mirror Contest like past years and this is the OFFICIAL handicapping ViewFromVegas handicapping contest for the 2020 NFL season, DaveTuley is upgrading the grand prize to 2 nights hotel in Las Vegas (sorry, you have to get yourself here) and dinner for 2 with DaveTuley along with $100 gift card and a ViewFromVegas shirt (season must end with a Super Bowl champion for this to be awarded)...he's also giving a $100 gift card and a VFV shirt to the top point-earner in the regular season (minimum 10 weeks)...we've had VFV Forum members offer up additional prizes in the past including cash and steak knives, so please contact DaveTuley if you have anything to add).
    18. ****Thanks to Compass Rose for starting discussion on this one****18. Any selection made, and then for whatever reason, the game is officially postponed or canceled, a substitute P.O.W. may be posted at the then available lines. If no substitute play is made, the original play will be graded as 0 points.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask and best of luck this season!

      Arizona +7.5 ..... William Hil

Last year's rookie QB did not play well the first four games last year, but then played very well the rest of the way. This team has outstanding receivers, picking up Hopkins from Houston. This is a division game and I will take the generous spot. The back door is a possibility here.

        Happy to see this!!
However need a rule for this year--
If a person picks a game and the game is NOT PLAYED due to whatever reason- what occurs on that pick?
I figure no point- and just move on to the next week right?
        Was just wondering--
Thanks for running this again and Best of luck to all this season, which I'm sure will be wacky.

          NYG +4 (T.I. )

Every Week One I take the team with the worst turnover ratio from the previous season. This year the Giants are tied with the Chargers for this”honor” and the Bolts just lost their All Pro Safety for the year. Teams who lost games due to turnovers the previous year have 7 months to wonder what might have been. Players are reminded at every turn they must do better in this dept and in Week One, at least, they usually do.

I think that would the best for all involved. As the grand marshal of this clown parade, I am making this official, lol

Also if game is canceled and there are other games not played, you can pick again?

Rule #18 has been added above to show Compass Rose's suggestion. I did add that if a game is played during that week it still counts. So if a game is moved from Thursday or Sunday to a MNF DH, then it will still count.

New England Patriots -6 - Westgate

Bill Belichick with something to prove now that TB12 moved to his Florida retirement home. Add in the fact that Miami knocked the Patriots from the 2 seed in week 17 last year. Patriots come out and cover the touchdown with ease.

NE surely has the motivation, but does it have the talent to lay the points?

              P.O.W. (0-0-0)

              GMEN plus 4 1/2 ( Circa)

Week one is always a crapshoot, never more true than this year. So leaning on any shred of the slightest advantage, I am using the famous Capcondo Turnover Ratio system.

Hopefully it pans out this week.
Also with a tougher head coach for the Giants, and perhaps Big Ben having to shake some rust out they will cover this number.

Thanks for starting this, gcotton. I'm thinking this might take over at the main VFV Football Contest for 2020. I'm leaning toward not doing the weekly/season-long contests at contests.viewfromvegas.com due to everything that's going on plus the lower traffic we're seeing here. However, if everyone comes back and we get something like 100 entries in Week 1 of this contest and I'm confident that we'll have a good showing in the "VFV SuperContest mirror contest," then I might add that next Wednesday...so we'll see how this goes.

As for the rule change above, I was going to say (and mrvolo beat me to it) that I think for this contest we can allow someone to post a substitute pick if they post a P.O.W. earlier in the week and it gets canceled due to COVID-19 positive tests, hurricanes, etc. This contest has always been about giving your best bet of the week and since we allow picks until kickoff of the game you're using, I don't see why we shouldn't allow everyone to still give their best bet of the remaining schedule.

                Proposed rule change:
                18. Any selection made, and then for whatever reason, the game is officially postponed or canceled, a substitute P.O.W. may be posted at the then available lines. If no substitute play is made, the original play will be graded as 0 points.

                  I was wondering about that.

I actually came here because I remembered the weekly contest and then saw the page was blank, so I went to the forums.

                Bengals +3.5 Circa

It's a new era in Cincinnati as the Red Rocket was finally cut loose (why they didn't trade him when he had some value last season is a mystery - then again, everything the Brown family does is a mystery), and Heisman winning, Natty Champ and home boy Joltin' Joe B. has taken the reins. For the first time in forever, it looks like the Bengals will have a full complement of healthy offensive talent to help this rookie who isn't acting like a rookie, and the O-line should be improved. I do like the vibe I am hearing out of Cincy training camp, and think they can keep this one close or maybe even eek out a victory. Safety Derwin James season ending knee injury is a very big blow to LA, and they were one of the biggest team disappointments in 2019. Look for Burrow to test their now suspect secondary with his excellent deep ball, and AJ Green to show why he is still an elite talent. Stranger things have happened, right?

Miami Dolphins +6 1/2 Wm. Hill

This is more of a pick against Patriots than a pro Miami pick. I just think that first week will be a glorified exhibition game with not much scoring. I just don't
feel Belichick will do as good without Brady. People forget that he did chose Drew Bledsloe over Brady. And if Bledsloe doesn't get hurt who knows what
happens. Alas, that is ancient history and in this game I just can't see Cam the Sham doing anything but wearing funny clothes to the after game press
conference. Dolphins cover in a low scoring boring affair.

                    Arizona +7.5 (Westgate)

Too many points here to start out of the gate. Cardinals played the Niners tough twice last year and Niners are Super Bowl losers (hangover?)
Kyler Murray has a year under his belt and a new reciever with speed. Kingsbury is more comfortable now. Niners are still good, but not this good this early.
                    Cardinals gaining ground.

Going to follow the Turnover differential this year and this is a week one game.New coach for Giants learned under the best.Owner,Mara, comes out and says he also feels good about this team and believe me he is at every practice. Also with the C19 going on I think teams flying, hotels, etc leaves them a little nervous and anxious.Going to see after a few weeks how this plays out but looking to take points on home teams or lay less then 3.Trying to get in before everybody catches on.
GL and Dave let’s have the Pro contest.

The Vikings are stacked defensively with pro bowl candidates, plus Cook is ready to go and they also got Ngakoue.
