        South Florida (-15.5) 49 MASSACHUSETTS 28
Massachusetts has allowed an average of 48 points to 5 FBS opponents that are not exactly known for being good offensively (BC, Georgia Southern, FIU, Charlotte, and Ohio). The Minutemen have been a horrendous 1.6 yards per play worse than average defensively even including their decent defensive performance against Duquesne to open the season, as they’ve surrendered 6.7 yppl to teams that would average 5.1 yppl against an average defense. The South Florida offense is 0.6 yppl better than the average attack that UMass has faced this season and the Bulls play at a faster pace on offense – so it’s actually likely that their points allowed per game rises a bit.
Massachusetts has a capable offense but South Florida’s mediocre defense is actually 0.9 yards per play better than what the Minutemen have faced this season so they’re not likely to approach their 35 points per game average today. UMass has faced 3 dreadfully bad defensive teams (Duquesne, Charlotte, and Ohio) and scored an average of 51 points in those games but they’ve managed just 19.3 points per game against Boston College, Georgia Southern and FIU, who collectively rate about the same as the USF defense. I don’t usually like to play huge road favorites but South Florida should dominate this game if they are mildly interested.

          BALL STATE (+3) 25 Northern Illinois 22
Northern Illinois was one of the favorites in the MAC before the season started and they’re as advertised defensively (4.7 yppl allowed) but the Huskies’ offense is dreadfully bad, averaging just 3.8 yards per play (against teams that would allow 5.4 yppl to an average team). NIU is 0.8 yppl better than average defensively but overall they’ve been 6.9 points worse than an average FBS team from the line of scrimmage.
Ball State, meanwhile, is about the same overall from the line of scrimmage, as the Cardinals have been 7.1 points worse than average in my line of scrimmage ratings with an offense that is 0.5 yppl worse than average and a defense that is 0.6 yppl worse than average but +6.3 in play margin. Ball State only lost by 8 points at Notre Dame and their 10-38 loss at Indiana is misleading (the stats project a 10 point defeat). These teams are pretty evenly matched and I considered making Ball State a Best Bet even considering NIU’s 22-5 ATS mark in conference road games that includes last week’s win at Eastern Michigan

            Syracuse (-3.5) 33 PITTSBURGH 24
If Syracuse can avoid a letdown after last week’s heartbreaking loss to Clemson then the Orange should win this game fairly comfortably. My only concern is that Pittsburgh will have good success running the football against a Cuse defensive front that’s allowed 6.9 yards per rushing play in 4 games against FBS opponents. My math model still likes the road favorite and no letdown situation applied to Syracuse.
