  • 2020 NFL P.O.W. Week #17 (January 3) Post Plays Here

This is the thread for the 2020 VFV NFL P.O.W. contest. The following are the rules for this year (the same as in the past):

    1. All contestants must be a member in good standing with VFV Forums
    2. Players make one (1) single play ATS each week during the NFL regular season
    3. A correct play results in one (1) point being awarded. A "push" or tie, results in a half point (1/2) being awarded
    4. An Incorrect play results in zero (0) points being awarded
    5. All lines MUST be taken from the following website each week:
    6. All lines must be -110 or less (must be posted on above buying 1/2 point)
    7. Only Vegas Sports Books listed on the VI website will be allowed
    9. The following selections are allowed: Full Game Side, Full Game Total, First Half Side, First Half Total (NO MONEYLINES ALLOWED)
    10. Plays MUST be submitted each week by kickoff of last scheduled game.
    11. Plays must be in the following format (or close to it):

2019 NFL P.O.W. (0-0-0 (post your current record here))

    Atlanta Falcons +3 (Golden Nugget)
(This is where you will post your reasoning for this selection. It doesn't have to be a book or even a full paragraph, but more than just "I think the Falcons are better.")

    12. Myself, Seahawk Rick (the artist formerly known as Cybergolf) or any other I deem so, will have final ruling on if a play is valid (ie: Wrong line, Wrong Book, Not enough reasoning given, etc)
    13. The first couple of weeks I will give the benefit of the doubt to any newcomers on here...veterans, you know the rules, LMEAO
    14. NO EDITING!!! (ironic, as this was edited by DaveTuley LMEAO) can't change your pick after you post it as this supposed to mirror the real world where you lock in your bet at the current number...if you need to clarify something in original post (typed in wrong team or line, or forget to cite sportsbooks, etc.), please quote in new post to bring it to the moderators attention
    15. For the first time, this year, Week 17 will be worth 2 points for a correct selection and 1 point for a push.
    16. To qualify for the playoff round of this competition, players must have a total of 10 points by the end of the regular season (week 17)...important note: your points will be the number of Units you start with in the playoff portion of the contest that runs through the Super Bowl and will be run by DaveTuley with locked-in spreads and totals, though Tuley often will give extra options if the market has variances such as Patriots -6.5 but also Steelers +7 being available); still debating maximum units allowed for playoff round (currently 5-unit max bet each playoff weekend).
    17. Since we are not doing the SuperContest Mirror Contest like past years and this is the OFFICIAL handicapping ViewFromVegas handicapping contest for the 2020 NFL season, DaveTuley is upgrading the grand prize to 2 nights hotel in Las Vegas (sorry, you have to get yourself here) and dinner for 2 with DaveTuley along with $100 gift card and a ViewFromVegas shirt (season must end with a Super Bowl champion for this to be awarded)...he's also giving a $100 gift card and a VFV shirt to the top point-earner in the regular season (minimum 10 weeks)...we've had VFV Forum members offer up additional prizes in the past including cash and steak knives, so please contact DaveTuley if you have anything to add).
    18. ****Thanks to Compass Rose for starting discussion on this one****18. Any selection made, and then for whatever reason, the game is officially postponed or canceled, a substitute P.O.W. may be posted at the then available lines. If no substitute play is made, the original play will be graded as 0 points.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask and best of luck this season!

It took 16 weeks, but we finally have a new leader. ICE TEA 2 has a half point lead over TARB going into the final week. Two new entries joined the playoffs this week, to bring our field to a total of 10 going into Week 17. And with this week worth two points, we have a chance to really add to the field.

        Chicago +4.5 ..... Westgate

Chicago might need this game to make the playoffs. Green Bay might have already secured the #1 seed with its bye and therefore rest a lot of key players.

GB has everything to play for as in a head-to-head with SEA they lose. IF NO and SEA win, and GB loses, NO gets home field said Steve Kornake on SNF halftime. They win, they're in. CHI will want to win though too.

I'm no longer in this but if I was I would select the Redskins -1. They are going to punish the Eagles with their defense. Rookie QB's do not want to face that defensive front, they will make life hell on Hurts.

I want to give a special shout-out to gcotton. For those unaware, he posted today on Facebook that he tested positive yesterday for COVID-19, but I never had a doubt that he would fulfill his appointed duties of posting the updated P.O.W. standings heading into the final week of the regular season. I never take a day off, so I don't expect my workers (er, volunteers) to take one either LMEAO!!!

But, seriously, a heart-felt "Get Well Soon" and an overall thank you for once again for picking up the weekly running of this P.O.W. contest that was orginally started back at the old ViewFromVegas Forums site by VFV charter member "eandhfred." I just don't have time during the regular season to monitor that people are submitting their plays correctly with current lines from the eligible books and grading all the results, etc. So I truly appreciate all the hard work.

While I'm at it, I want to thank everyone again who participated in this contest and, in some ways, keeping the VFV Forums alive with the consistently most popular thread each week during the NFL season. But it's not just the "hits" that I appreciate, it's the time end effort into everyone trying to post their best NFL P.O.W. each week. Even though I've made up my mind with my selections each week (since I post my "takes" each Wednesday in the VSiN "Point Spread Weekly" digital magazine and make my best bets) well before most people here post their opinions, so I'm not looking for picks, I still read everyone's picks each week and I pick up little trends or facts on players and teams that help me in my future handicapping. And I believe that a lot of people do that, even people that aren't participating in the contest themselves. It's that sharing of information and the sense of community of trying to beat the books that is the heart of soul of everything we do here at ViewFromVegas.

So, Happy New Year to VFV Nation and best of luck this weekend and all year long. I'm also excited to see if ICE TEA 2 or TARB wins the $100 gift card and VFV shirt for the best regular-season record and then on to the playoff format for the grand prize as listed in the rules at the top of the thread. GLA

          Yours truly,

            NFL POW

            GCotton's Falcons +6.5 (Stations)

It was a brutal shock reading Dave's excellent heartfelt post above. Can't thank you enough G Cotton for administering this contest. I know all too well that being "unpaid commissioner" on these pools/contests is a thankless job. Praying for your quick recovery and future good health.

Lots of variables, but Tompa Bay will probably be @ NFC Beast Champion in week 18 if they win this game. Though in theory, that would seem to give them incentive to play hard throughout, I still think they are going to have 60 year old Tom and his Skill Position friends in Baseball Hats in the 2nd half. Love to play the "bounce" angle in NFL and after last week's lights out performance, I can see Bucs coming back to Earth in this less-than-critical game. Falcons still probably need a good win to shed Coach Raheem the "Interim" tag & what better way than to beat the Bucs in the Pirate Ship. Revenge probably a big factor since Falcons surrendering lead late in game 1 of this series was only 2 weeks ago and still very much in ATL's minds. Loser of game 1 of this series is 20-5 ATS in game 2. ATL playing good D on the road lately, giving up only 20 pts per game over last 5 roadys. Hoping Julio Jones can limp onto the field for the finale and remind everyone "what could have been"

Tampa is 2-9 ATS last 3 years as Home Favorite of 7 or less. Atlanta over last 3 years is 8-3 ATS in last 4 weeks of season & 4-1 ATS in last 2 weeks of season.

Good Luck, Stay Safe & Happy New Year.

Thanks for the well-wishers Dave. Not that I never believed this thing was real, now I know for a fact it is. Symptoms started Saturday morning, just very run down and tired. Didn't think much of it as I was up all night Xmas Eve/Xmas morning plowing snow for work. Had a pretty bad headache Sat as well as a rough cough. Sunday was more of the same. Went in to work on Mon morning and they told me to go get tested. Got the results in about 15 mins. Yesterday, day 4, seemed to be better, but woke up this morning with zero energy again. Had to take the trash to the curb and it felt like I had ran a marathon. To be honest, the worst of it all has been the body/muscle aches and pain. It feels like I was in a horrible car crash.

With a daughter that is a RN and on the frontline of this, I know that so far, I am lucky with my symptoms. Fingers crossed that things are on the way up. The vaccine is around the corner and hopefully we will be back to normal come next football season. And hey, we will have an extra week of POW next year too, lol.

Thanks again for the kind words and messages. Now I just need a winner this week to make it to the playoffs myself, lol.

Sending some warm prayers from Florida your way.Know a lot of people affected with this and know how brutal it can be.Hope you turned the curve and are on the way back to normal.I am scheduled for a vaccine shot end of January as our Governor has moved the over 75 group up in priority and I was lucky to find the 1 Hospital in Miami Dade giving shots so far.

ATLANTA FALCONS +7 (CIRCA) OVER TB

Bucs have been up and down all year and think this is ATL's playoff game to end the season with a win despite its best efforts losing a lot of close games in the last few weeks. Hope they are not flat after almost beating KC, but I don't see TB blowing them out and just squeaking out a win in a game that does not mean all that much to Bucs at this point except for playoff positioning.Bucs win but Atl covers.

                  NFL P.O.W. ( 8-8-0)

                  TB/ATL UNDER 50 1/2 ( HILL)
                  for 2 points Alex

Think TB will sit or take it easy in any case. I have trend that says under- my trends this year are... uh... 8 and 8

                  Hopefully see ya next week--

Mr C-- Feel better and thank you for another fun contest- neither vacations- headaches-- or COVID keeps you down!!!!!!

Do Bills need this one? Won't they rest some players. Just seeding with Pitt? Miami definitely needs it.

If Pitt wins they must win to stay#2 which means Home field in Semi.Granted 2 or 3 not that big of a deal.

Pitt is resting Big Ben and a bunch of others and are 10 point underdogs, so I would think Buffalo can and will relax. Miami needs it bad or they are out. I'm surprised Buffalo is still favored.

                    POW 9-7

                    Carolina+6.5 (Wynn)

Panthers are well coached, competitive, and playing hard until the end. No Kamara because of Covid, is huge loss for Saints. Feel Panthers will keep it close just like the 1st time they played, wouldn't be surprised if they won outright.
