  • 2018 NFL P.O.W. (play of the week) Contest: Week 1 (Sept. 6-10) post plays in here

This is the thread for the 2018 VFV NFL P.O.W. contest. The following are the rules for this year (the same as in the past):

    1. All contestants must be a member in good standing with VFV
    2. Players make one (1) single play ATS each week during the NFL regular season
    3. A correct play results in one (1) point being awarded. A "push" or tie, results in a half point (1/2) being awarded
    4. An Incorrect play results in zero (0) points being awarded
    5. All lines MUST be taken from the following website each week: http://www.vegasinsider.com/nfl/odds/las-vegas/
    6. All lines must be -120 or less (must be posted on above site...no buying 1/2 point)
    7. Only Vegas Sports Books listed on the VI website will be allowed
    8. The following Books will NOT be allowed: VI Consensus, BetOnline, PepperMill, Atlantis Reno
    9. The following selections are allowed: Full Game Side, Full Game Total, First Half Side, First Half Total (NO MONEYLINES ALLOWED)
    10. Plays MUST be submitted each week by kickoff of last scheduled game.
    11. Plays must be in the following format (or close to it):

2018 NFL P.O.W. (0-0-0 (post your current record here))

    Atlanta Falcons +3 (Golden Nugget)
(This is where you will post your reasoning for this selection. It doesn't have to be a book or even a full paragraph, but more than just "I think the Falcons are better.")

    12. Myself, Seahawk Rick (the artist formerly known as Cybergolf) or any other I deem so, will have final ruling on if a play is valid (ie: Wrong line, Wrong Book, Not enough reasoning given, etc)
    13. The first couple of weeks I will give the benefit of the doubt to any newcomers on here...veterans, you know the rules, LMEAO
    14. To qualify for the playoff round of this competition, players must have a total of 10 points by the end of the regular season (week 17)...important note: your points will be the number of Units you start with in the playoff portion of the contest that runs through the Super Bowl)
    15. Prizes to be determined by DaveTuley....we've had fellow posters offer up prizes in the past, so please let me know if anyone has anything to offer or ideas for yours truly (yes, this is an edit by DaveTuley I'd like to have a prize for the person earning the most points during the regular season...and then the overall champ after the Super Bowl (and perhaps a runner-up prize).

If you have any questions, feel free to ask and best of luck this season!

Thanks for overseeing this again. I see that lines up to -120 are allowable. This would be a new rule, as in past years they couldn’t be more than -110. If this is your intent, no problem, it’s your contest. I did want to point it out in case it’s an oversight.

Thanks McGrath....I couldn't remember if we used -110 or -120 as our cut-off. I will change it in the rules. Like I said, that was way too many beers ago, lol.

As FreeJack mentioned, no edits to official plays.

    BROWNS +6 ..... Coasts
This Cleveland team is much improved over last year's team; big upgrade at QB, better defense, etc. Pittsburgh either will be without RB Bell or Bell will not be ready to play at his best. WR Brown is questionable. This is a division game and the home team knows more about the Steelers than Pittsburgh knows about this rejuvenated Cleveland team. I have a cash bet on Cleveland at +7, but that line is long gone. I actually think that Cleveland can win outright. I even have a flyer on the Browns to win the Super Bowl at 200/1 odds.

gcotton...thanks for getting this up and running. Much appreciated. Always a popular and entertaining contest originally started by longtime VFV Forums member eandhfred and then gcotton dutifully has picked it up.

HEY...look, I can now edit individual posts unlike in the old forums LMEAO. I edited the rules above, mostly to address these 2 topics:

Allowing up to -120 (I debated on this, but oftentimes a game will be -2.5 -120 at some books and +3 -120 at others and doesn't seem right/fair to force people to take +2.5 EV or -3 EV in those cases; besides, in the long run, it's not like someone is going to pick up that much of an edge searching for -120 lines -- and hitting them repeatedly -- to make an overall difference in whether someone makes the playoffs with 10 points or not (and we allow this in the playoffs anyway, so seems consistent with the overall rules and the overall intent of this contest).

Speaking of playoffs, I also wanted to make sure we added the rule and let everyone know that the number of points you earn during the regular season is then used as your starting Units in the playoffs.

Let us know if we didn't cover something. GLA

DaveTuley how can I enter the contest this year? Is this a pay to play or just for fun?

            Pittsburgh...you're in!

It's FREE...just have to be a member in good standing and no one's had enough time to get banned LMEAO. But it's not just for fun...in the past, we've done a prize of a $100 gift card (NFL contests usually end up with $100 online gift certificate for NFL.com) so we'll at least offer that and see what more we can scrape up...of course, the accolades of being the P.O.W. champ far outweighs any earthly possessions we could provide

                  2018 NFL P.O.W. (0-0-0 YTD)

                  Atlanta Falcons +3 (MGM)

I want to grab the full 3 as this line is already dropping. Most books have it at 2.5 and I can see it dropping more as we get closer to Thursday night. This may sound like a "homer" selection to you guys (for those that don't know, I am a die-hard Falcons fan), but I just think ATL is the better team. Foles has looked very pedestrian at best this preseason, and I really think Pederson was hoping that Wentz would be ready to go under center, but now he is stuck with Foles. When these teams met in January, ATL was a banged up team. Julio and Freeman had been battling injuries all season long and missed time. Now they are both 100% healthy, and the addition of Ridley makes this ATL team one of the top 2 or 3 offenses in the league this year. The defense is very fast and very fresh and will give Foles fits all night long. ATL goes into Philly and gets revenge!

                  ATLANTA FALCONS 31
                  PHILADELPHIA EAGLES 20

Best of luck to all this week and this season!

It was poor play-calling that got the Falcons beat last year. I’m sure Sarkisian has learned his lesson. Now, only if he’s sober…

                      Cincinnati Bengals +3 (MGM)
Will this be the year that Marvin Lewis gets the axe? I have seen a different sense of urgency in the preseason, they are finally healthy, and look for Mixon and Ross to have break out years. No more double teaming AJ Green with this collection of offensive weapons and a retooled offensive line. Bengals on the money line for me, but i will take the 3 point gift. The defense will play to their usual standard (meaning Burfict will miss half the season for one dumb reason or another lolol) and the Bengals make a return to the playoffs. I put a hundred on Mixon to win rushing title @ 50-1. Did i light that cash on fire?

Cleveland Browns +5.5 (or +6, if I'm allowed to retroactively grab it when TARB initially posted. Want it either way)...(MGM)

Steelers went 1-5 ATS without Ryan Shazier to close the season, allowing an average 28.3 ppg and 5.1 YPC to opposing backfields. PIT also 14-24 ATS as road favorites of more than 3 points under Mike Tomlin. Offense averaged only 21.5 ppg on the road the last three seasons compared to 29.6 ppg at home in that span.

thanks for entering this season! You will be graded with the 5.5. That is part of what makes this contest so much fun, is that you need to shop and make your play at the right time. Great write-up on the game though and best of luck this season!

                            Denver
                            -2½ Wynn LV
Case Keenum shows up where ever he plays. He looked good in the pre season and they
have a strong defense. Traditionally a strong home team and Seattle's best seems to be behind them
