  • 2019 NFL P.O.W. Ideas/Rule Changes/ETC

Good afternoon guys and gals(if any are still around here).......With the season rapidly arriving, I just thought I would start a thread so that anyone can feel free to post any ideas or possible rule changes for this years contest.

My personal opinion is that it has worked pretty much perfectly the past 35 years(JK) that nothing needs to be changed (except for the fact I have never made the playoffs, but I digress).....but if someone would like to recommend something, I'm all ears.

If you are new to the site and have no idea what I 'm talking about, here is a quick run-through:

One of the original posters on here back from day 1, EANDHFRED, started a contest in year one, that basically you just pick one winner each week against the spread in the NFL. But the main rule in this contest is that you must state a reason or to WHY this is your top play each week. We have had to make a few slight adjustments to the rules over the years: You must now use only a a few sportsbooks listed on the Vegas Insider website, and the reason for your selection cant be "They are just a better team". We want a bit more than that. Some on here go into great detail each week, while others just post a couple of sentences.

When E had to step away a few years ago, with his blessing and Dave's, I took over running this contest. I have a couple of my minions that help protect the integrity of the contest each week by looking over everyones selections and alerting me if anything needs addressed. These issues have been very few and are usually early in the season when people are getting used to the rules if they have never been in it before.

Each week you get 1 point for a correct selection, a half (.5) point for a push and are not punished for a loss. The goal is to accumulate 10 points over the 17 weeks of the regular season to advance to the playoff round. In the playoffs, Dave sets the lines and types of wagers you can play. Full rules will be posted in the week one thread and each week there after.

We have had anywhere from 40-50 people in this each year, so I look forward to seeing some old names as well as some new ones.

Thanks, gcotton...this thread has 30 views so at least that many people are lurking around LMEAO!
It's sure to pick up in next few weeks and especially for NFL Week 1.
I agree with the overall feeling that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" but willing to hear suggestions. I guess the one from last year's playoffs were some players wanting to risk more than 5 units on playoff weekends. I understand the reasons why....but also like the idea that the people who had the most wins/points during the regular season have the best chance to claim the title if they go 4-0 or even 3-1 in the NFL playoffs. Don't feel someone should take the lead just because they went all-in and won 1 game. But, again, willing to hear input from everyone.

Not smart enough to try and think of a way to improve this game, but I sure do appreciate you doing it. Looking forward to the season starting..

I've mentioned this here and there in some posts the last couple of years about how I'd like to see Week 17 be worth two-points for a win to add a few more players who have a shot to get into the playoffs the final week. It's an effed up week where it takes luck and knowledge to figure out who is all in still, and who might be sitting players getting ready for the playoffs.

The year I won was when we could 'pot it' if we wanted to, and you could also make a play Saturday and then another one on Sunday. I mainly would like to have the option to bet ALL my points on a game if I wanted to, and if the people that start the playoffs with the most points don't want to make big bets to stay in the lead, then that's their deal, and others shouldn't be held back from betting as much as they want. The way it's structured now, if the person with the most points bets the max-5 each game and goes undefeated, nobody else has a change to win. If the leader(s) want to pot it each time, they will win too, but it would be more interesting to see if the leaders would do that. I just want to see more people have a shot to come from behind and win it by putting their nuggets on the table. If you lose a 'pot it' bet, you're toast, but that's the fun of it all IMHO! The people with the most points earned the right to have an edge in the playoffs, but I feel betting your points how you see fit is THE AMERICAN WAY...FREEDOM DAMN IT!!! FREE TO BET THE MAX without the shackles on! We're gonna be Russia soon IF this rule isn't implemented!!!! LMEAO!

Which idea?! 2-point final week or pot it mania???? I'm guessing the pot it one...

It doesn't make much difference to me because I haven't been in the playoffs since leather helmets were all the rage!

Seahawk Rick, you're assuming it's the "pot it" one but I'm assuming gcotton meant the "2-point final week" one (since he turns over the P.O.W. to me for the playoffs).

As for the "pot it" one, I hear ya (hard to not hear your booming voice loud and clear LMEAO)...but I keep reading your comment "The way it's structured now, if the person with the most points bets the max-5 each game and goes undefeated, nobody else has a change to win" and I still don't see how there's anything wrong with that! Plus, we don't weight our picks during the regular season as it's supposed to just be everyone's best bet each week, so playoff picks should be the same in my opinion. Besides, I'd be more agreeable if I felt that people were being completely honest when going "all-in" that it was because they really, truly believed it was a really great bet, but I know that it would be far more likely that everyone doing that was doing it as a desparate Hail Mary to double up. That's really not the lesson of money-management that we try to teach around here.

Still considering all suggestions (and awaiting gcotton's reply

Dave, you are correct......I was talking about the final week being worth 2 points. So basically if you are sitting at 8 going into the final week you are still alive.

The way it's been going for me the last few seasons in this contest I will need the last week to be worth seven at least!

Agree with Rick. If you want to keep it from an all-in hail mary, you could go in steps. Max 5 units first week, 10 second week, etc. Or back to allowing parlays (can't remember if they were removed)...

I understand where Rick is coming from, but the 5 point max is still a much larger wager than the one point you get for each win, and things can swing because you have the option of betting anywhere from 1 to 5 points. The year I won - yes I'm bragging because it's the only thing I've ever won - I wasn't in first at the end of the regular season.

I do like Rick's suggestion for 2 points for a week 17 win - he has a great point that it's the toughest week by far to handicap.

I have no suggestions, just thanks Cotton and Dave for running things.

that two points at week 17 is the soundest thing Rick has said in years-
the new meds are working wonderfully and I believe humoring him is best now.
So perhaps go with that idea.
            Youโ€™re country thanks you...

Sound thinking is not my middle name, but give me credit for bringing it up AGAIN, as I did a few years ago, but was shot down like me asking Liz Hurley out on a date...I guess people are not listening to me as much as they used to, and are seeing the light at the end of the contest. Now where's that pill bottle...

I think that is an excellent idea...That stupid money management crap comes into play a little more to keep the Grand Poo-Ba less salty! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Not sure if all saw my reply to Dave, but I was agreeing with Rick that Week 17 will now be worth 2 points. So anyone with at least 8 points will still be alive going into week 17.

And I was probably drunk two years ago when you suggested this before, lol.
